Sheer silk, she thought, running the material through her fingers. Bridal white, sleeveless, cut on the bias, the crossover bodice fastened with a single pearl button. She slipped it over her head, smoothed the nightgown over her hips. She regarded herself solemnly in the long, swinging cheval mirror. The light behind her made the garment see-through.

‘More the night for flannel and bed socks,’ she murmured aloud ruefully. She turned and climbed into the bed: ‘Three-quarter size, not quite a double,’ Celia had said, ‘but I guess you won’t mind that.’ Elin turned the lamp low, and pulled the sheet up under her chin. She drifted off to sleep again; it had been an eventful day . . .

‘Elin, darling,’ Mark whispered urgently in her ear.

She stretched, yawned, then nestled against him, suddenly vibrantly aware of his hands sliding down her silk-clad shoulders, his fingers hesitating over the little button.

‘Mark . . .’ She pushed the small pearl through the buttonhole herself. ‘Look, I’m sure you can tell I’m nervous, but then you are, too, aren’t you? It’s the most natural thing in the world, and I want it to happen, because, well, I love you.’

‘I only thought – you’re so young, Elin, and—’

‘Have I made you happy today? D’you love me?’

‘Yes! You know I do. Believe me!’ His arms tightened round her, his lips caressed, warmed her bare skin.

‘Then show me just how much,’ she said softly, as she thrilled to his touch.
